HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Aluminum Can Recycling – HSHC has 12 recycling bins throughout the county and North Columbus.  Volunteers pick up cansfrom the collection sites and deliver to recycler in Columbus.  In addition, we collect metal for recyling as well. This includes washers, dryers and scrap metal of all kinds. Volunteers pick up items at the Adoption Center or at donors home . .

Doggone Good Treasures - HSHC's resale shop in Pine Mountain needs retail help Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm (two 3 hour shifts are available).  In addition, inventory volunteers on off days process, price and display donations. All proceeds from the shop support the Humane Society's life saving mission.

ransportation Volunteers – transport dogs and cats from Adoption Center to veterinary visits each Thursday.  Drop off at vet at 8:30 am and pick up at 3:30 pm.  Strong back required.  Crates need to be moved into vet office to contain animals during their visit. Each leg of trip is about 1 ½ hours.

Office Volunteer – answer phones,  meet public, facilitate adoptions, laundry and dishes.  Volunteers needed Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Grant Writing – Volunteer needed to assist Executive Director with grant applications.  Work can be done at home.

Dog Walking and Training  – Getting dogs out, exercised and instilling good manners is critical to their well being.  The HSHC Adoption Center has a walking trail as well as a play yard for a variety of exercise opportunities. As many of our dogs lack leash manners a sense of humor is required for this task.  This activity is available 6 days a week.  Walking starts after 11:00 am  to 4:00 pm. Special orientation outlined below is required.

Walking Trail Volunteers – general maintenance of established walking trail includes clearing new growth, raking and filling trail, maintaining plantings, etc.  Once a month.

Pet Smart and Offsite Adoption Volunteers – 75% of our adoptions still take place away from the Adoption Center on Saturdays and Sundays.  Adoption volunteers are needed to help pack and transport animals to and from remote sites, in addition volunteers are needed to help with the adoption event itself which typically runs from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Grooming and Adoption Prep – Friday afternoons means getting the animals for the weekend in ship shape for adoptions.  Basic bathing and brushing along with ears and nails are the focus.  Wet and messy work, a sense of humor would be helpful.

Photography – Good photographs of our animals can make or break a possible inquiry off the internet and social media. This need is weekly with no particular day of the week specified.  Photographs of special events and volunteer events are needed as well.  Animal photographs require at least two people.

HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER

We welcome prospective volunteers 18 years and older to submit an application by clicking on the link  below.  Those 14 through 17 years may apply with a parent or guardian signature. 14 and 15 year olds must be under parent or guardian supervision.  If you are interested in bringing a youth group for a service project please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 706 582 3007.

Once an application is received and accepted our volunteer coordinator with send the applicant a copy of our Volunteer Handbook via email.  Applicants need to read the handbook thoroughly.  If at that time they believe they are ready to accept the obligations and responsibilities as outlined, they will sign up for a brief orientation.

Orientation sessions are conducted on an individual basis.  Upon completion of orientation, the applicant will receive an HSHC Volunteer T-Shirt (at no cost) and may sign up for volunteer tasks.  The volunteer tasks listed below require additional training before assignment can be made.

Walking Club volunteers as well as general exercise volunteers or those who wish to become involved in dog training are required to take additional training before beginning any volunteering requiring dog handling. Two 90 minute sessions will familiarize new volunteers with residing dogs, safety procedures and basic dog training. These orientation sessions are available the first Saturday of every month from 10:30 am to Noon.
